Open-Source AI Agent Frameworks: A New Era for Autonomous Systems

AI agent frameworks are structured software environments that enable autonomous agents to plan, reason, interact with tools, and execute tasks efficiently. They standardize key components such as orchestration, memory management, tool integration, and multi-agent coordination, allowing developers to build scalable, production-ready AI systems. A strong framework enables agents to interface with both internal and external data and tool sources, read context, conduct intentional actions, and cooperate with other agents.

Several open-source AI agent frameworks have emerged as top contenders in the industry. LangGraph is the fastest framework with the lowest latency values across all tasks, while LangChain has the highest latency and token usage. AutoGen leads in latency, followed closely by LangGraph and LangChain. CrewAI draws the heaviest overall profile due to its multi-step verification process between its Planner and Analyst personas.

Neel Somani has introduced two open-source projects, Adcock Agent and Web2MCP, designed to advance the development of browser-based AI agents. These frameworks enable agents to interpret page structure and execute actions in a browser environment, allowing them to interact with websites autonomously. Adcock Agent is a DOM-based browser agent framework, while Web2MCP allows developers to convert traditional websites into Model Context Protocol (MCP) interfaces.
